NAIDOC Month: Celebrating Native Botanicals and Indigenous Skin Wisdom

by | Jul 3, 2025

At Austin Clinic, we believe thereโ€™s more to great skincare than new technology. Great skin is the product of new technology and timeless wisdom. This NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Month, we celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people and highlight the role of native ingredients in skincare and the deep Indigenous knowledge systems that teach us how to use them. We invite you to reflect on the incredible depth of knowledge held by the First Peoples of this land โ€“ especially when it comes to caring for our precious environment, bodies โ€ฆ and skin.

Skin Health: Holistically Speaking

In traditional Aboriginal culture, skin is not just a protective barrier โ€“ itโ€™s a living part of a personโ€™s spirit and identity. Caring for it involves more than moisturising; it includes connection to land, diet, ritual, and natural remedies. And thatโ€™s where native botanicals come in.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have practiced their holistic health and healing for over 65,000 years. Their knowledge of plants and natural remedies is incredibly rich, passed down through generations and tailored to Australiaโ€™s diverse and often harsh climates.

Native Botanicals: More Than Just a Trend

Today, Australian native botanicals are taking the global skincare world by storm โ€ฆ and with good reason. These ingredients evolved to survive extreme conditions, so they tend to be:

  • Potent
  • Antioxidant-rich
  • Naturally protective

Many also have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making them ideal for skincare in our often sun-drenched, dry environment. With that in mind, letโ€™s highlight just a few standout ingredients that our clients at Austin Clinic love.

Kakadu Plum: A Vitamin C Powerhouse

Known traditionally as gubinge, Kakadu Plum is native to northern Australia and has been used by Indigenous communities for generations as bush medicine and food. Itโ€™s the richest known natural source of Vitamin C โ€“ weโ€™re talking up to 100 times more than oranges!

What can Kakadu do for you? Plenty!

  • Brighten dull skin
  • Boost collagen production
  • Help reduce pigmentation
  • Offer strong antioxidant protection against UV damage and pollution

Kakadu Plum is ideal for revitalising tired skin, especially during or after sun exposure โ€“ something all Australians can relate to!

Finger Lime: Natureโ€™s Gentle Exfoliant

The zesty Finger Lime, sometimes called citrus caviar, has long been harvested by Indigenous people for both food and skin healing. In skincare, Finger Lime extract is valued for its natural AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids), which gently exfoliate the skin.

How can Finger Lime help your skin? Like this:

  • Promote cell turnover
  • Refine pores
  • Smooth texture
  • Help brighten skin tone

Itโ€™s a beautiful, gentle ingredient for those looking to reveal fresher, more luminous skin โ€“ without the harshness of synthetic peels.

But Wait! Thereโ€™s More!

Australia is positively bursting with botanical gems. Here are a few more you might spot on skincare labels:

Quandong: High in Vitamin E and essential fatty acids, great for hydration and elasticity.

Wattleseed: Contains amino acids and antioxidants, great for soothing and healing.

Emu Bush (Eremophila): Traditionally used as an antibacterial agent โ€“ excellent for problem or acne-prone skin.

Many of these ingredients are now being sustainably farmed in collaboration with Indigenous communities, creating economic opportunities while preserving cultural knowledge.

Learning From Indigenous Wisdom

One of the most important lessons Indigenous knowledge teaches us is respect for balance โ€“ between humans and nature, as well as between tradition and innovation. Rather than stripping plants of their essence or over-processing them, traditional methods focus on whole-plant benefits, gentle extraction, and sustainable use.

At Austin Clinic, weโ€™re inspired by this approach. Many of our clients come to us looking for holistic skin solutions, help that goes beyond just surface treatments. Native ingredients and the philosophies behind them offer exactly that: a grounded, respectful, and effective way to nurture skin from within.

How to Incorporate Native Ingredients in Your Routine

If youโ€™re new to native ingredients, here are some tips to help you get started:

Check your labels โ€“ Look for Kakadu Plum, Finger Lime, or other native extracts in serums, cleansers, or moisturisers.

Support ethical brands โ€“ Choose products that work with Indigenous growers and practice sustainable harvesting.

Try something new โ€“ Ask us at Austin Clinic for recommendations. Weโ€™re always happy to guide you toward products that fit your unique skin needs.

Celebrating More Than Skin

This NAIDOC Month, we encourage you to spread your wings. Look beyond your current skincare shelf choices and explore more of what Indigenous culture offers. Attend a local event, read Indigenous-authored books, support First Nations artists and businesses โ€“ and take a moment to thank the traditional custodians of this land for their enduring wisdom.

At Austin Clinic, weโ€™re proud to live and work on the lands of the Gayemagal people of the Eora Nation, and we pay deep respect to Elders past and present. We commit to learning, listening, and sharing stories that uplift and heal โ€“ not only skin, but spirit too.
