Anti-Ageing Skin Serum Ingredients to Count On

Are you someone who asks why and how when it comes to anti-ageing skin care? You should. It’s useful to know why an ingredient is included in a product and how it works to keep your skin young and radiant.

Niacinamide

More commonly known as Vitamin B3, niacinamide combats the oxidative stress of free radicals. It has been shown to reduce redness and inflammation while improving skin texture, tone, and moisture levels impacted by ageing. “In a repair serum and other products, this water-soluble ingredient helps to tighten pores, diminish dullness and overall strengthen damaged skin,” reports Dr Austin.

Retinaldehyde

This specific form of Vitamin A is prized for its ability to create volume in dermal tissue. “Vitamin A is a natural for a repair serum as it helps normalise overactive melanocytes that lead to age-related pigmentation problems,” says Dr Austin. “It’s extremely safe and can be used by women who are pregnant.”

Tetrapeptide 30

Made up of four amino acids, this peptide works to fade age spots. “It inhibits the production of tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for the creation of melanin,” explains Dr Austin. “It also prevents melanin from being transferred into the upper layers ofthe skin.”

Hyaluronic Acid

Dry, deflated skin is one of the most unwelcome signs of ageing. Hyaluronic acid inhibits transepidermal water loss to keep skin moist and hydrated. It has the power to repair the skin’s barrier function and assist in natural healing. “Hyaluronic acid can bind up to 1000 times its own weight in moisture,” reports Dr Austin. “It is extremely effective at plumping skin to make it more youthful.”

Red Algae Extract

Seaweeds are a buffet of beauty. They are loaded with polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, pigments, and vitamins, among other substances that are readily absorbed into the skin. Red algae contains carrageenan, a bioactive that helps protect skin from environmental stressors. As if that weren’t enough to make red algae a top ingredient, it also contains mycosporine-like amino acids that help absorb solar energy and protect skin from UV rays.
