How Long Does BBL Last?

by | Jul 15, 2019

Want to hear a great story? It’s an oldie, but a goodie, with a very happy ending to boot. After eight years of annual broadband light (BBL) treatments, a group of study participants were assessed by skin professionals and judged to look 9 years younger than their chronological age. Impressive huh?

The BBL system from Sciton is what we use at Austin Clinic. It’s the most complete and versatile broadband light system in its class. With an extensive range of wavelengths, BBL allows a highly targeted treatment for many skin conditions. “This really is the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth for delaying skin ageing,” the study author reported to the annual meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Since that time, things have gotten better and better for BBL and for Austin Clinic patients seeking maximum facial rejuvenation.

How Can I Get Longest Lasting BBL Results?

The 1992 study mentioned above was the first blinded evaluation of the long-term results of BBL therapy. It was already known that BBL treatments were effective for treating

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Facial redness
  • Brown spots
  • Signs of facial ageing

“This ground-breaking study focused specifically on individuals who received regular top-off treatments annually,” says Dr Austin. “Its findings provided concrete evidence that prolonged use of BBL therapy reverses and prevents signs of ageing.” (When the therapy was first introduced, it was feared BBL treatments would accelerate ageing in the long term.)

Broadband Light Therapy for First-Timers

Get ready to look better fast! A typical BBL treatment takes just 10-15 minutes. The non-invasive treatment is virtually pain-free. “Our patients describe the sensation as something like having your skin snapped by a warm rubber band,” says Dr Austin. As a result, there is no need for anaesthesia, topical anaesthetics, or even pain medication in most cases.

There is no downtime required after a BBL treatment either. You can get back to your regular routines, “Just be extra careful about sun exposure and sun protection,” advises Dr Austin.

The benefits of your first treatment will start to become apparent in just 1-2 weeks. “Most people need a series of two to four treatments,” says Dr Austin, noting that individuals with rosacea and/or vascular sun damage may require additional sessions. “I recommend that patients return after a month for a skin assessment and to see if any adjustment should be made to the treatment plan in place. “The configuration of the BBL head doesn’t allow us to overlap passes across the face, and for some patients, that can mean a slightly striped result,” says Dr Austin. “The problem is easily solved with a subsequent treatment.”

Each patient is given a customised treatment plan. It’s typical to schedule successive treatments approximately four weeks apart. Many patients begin treatments in the autumn and have another two in late winter/early spring. By the time summer holiday season rolls around, they look marvellous.

After that, a single annual visit should be enough to help you maintain results.
